A year ago today
I bid my baby farewell
A child who wasn't meant to be
but was loved all the same.
A year ago today
a bittersweet departure
Sorrow mixed with guilt and relief
clouded a sweet soul's passing.
A year ago today
my life slipped between the void
Between here and there
somewhere and nowhere
my soul explored the unknown.
As my life force spilled out
into puddles of red
saturating the floors, the baseboards, the bed,
I wondered what lessons were mine to learn
given to me by my sweet child
who never saw the light of day.
A year ago today
I began walking down this path
towards clarity,
towards freedom,
towards love.
I look up to the universe
and feel gratitude for everything in my life
including that sweet soul and a year ago today.

Wordless Wednesday: Sunshine and Rainbows
Yesterday the four boys and I did a variety of rainbow-themed activities to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and the upcoming spring weather. I have to say, having Pinterest in my life has made activity planning so much fun! I was just as excited as the children! Also, the 80 degree sunny day put a spring in my step as we were able to spend over two hours outside during the morning followed by three hours outside in the afternoon/evening. Enjoy the pictures below and follow the links included if you want to give any of these ideas a try!
Wishing you a spring filled with rainbows and sunshine!

I Am the Universe
Written over a decade ago, this poem resurfaced in my mind over the past few weeks. So often, we forget how irreplaceable and precious we are. We are each a part of our Universe and hold the power to manifest any dream into reality. Although there are aspects of this poem which do not represent where I currently am in my life story, the main message still speaks to me throughout the years.
I am the Center of the Universe
because the Universe is Me.
Here, in my soul, lies the center of my existence.
Below it is the roundness of my stomach,
the strength of my thighs,
and the power in my step
to lead me down ANY path I choose to follow.
I am the Center of the Universe
because the Universe is Me.
Here, in my soul, lies the center of my existence.
Below it is the roundness of my stomach,
the strength of my thighs,
and the power in my step
to lead me down ANY path I choose to follow.

True Nature
The truth is always there
a well found deep within
I wander away for awhile
but return time and again
Within the stillness
I know who I am
When life gets hurried
I lose track of who I am
Convenience takes precedence
amongst all of the noise
When I listen to my inner voice
I touch the divine joy
of Truth, of Justice, of Wisdom, of Love
There is a oneness around me
below and above
a well found deep within
I wander away for awhile
but return time and again
Within the stillness
I know who I am
When life gets hurried
I lose track of who I am
Convenience takes precedence
amongst all of the noise
When I listen to my inner voice
I touch the divine joy
of Truth, of Justice, of Wisdom, of Love
There is a oneness around me
below and above

Nurturing Little Peeps
Well, we did it. After seven years of thinking, wondering, researching, and debating, we finally went and picked up six little 2-day-old girls yesterday. We are proud caretakers to a little flock of chicks!
There were many reasons we decided that this year was the most opportune time. First, we value local, organic food and enjoy eggs from free-range chickens. Our farmers that we had been getting our eggs from decided to stop offering eggs at the farmers' market each week. The price of eggs continues to go up due to rising cost of quality feed. By investing in our own chickens, we can have fresh eggs right out of our own yard.
The second reason was that our daily schedule is flexible and there is usually someone at home at all times. We aren't sure what next year will bring when our oldest is kindergarten-aged in terms of work for me or his schedule. Now is the perfect time to spend unlimited time doting over small chicks, making sure the warming light is positioned just right and that they are held often so they are used to us when they grow into bigger birds.
The third and most important reason that we decided on chicks this year was that the boys are at the best age to learn about caring for these animals. They love their dog, cat, and fish. They understand that animals need good food, fresh water, warmth, and love. They are learning about the life/death/life cycle of all living things and we have talked to them about how there is a possibility that not all of the chicks will make it through these first couple weeks. (We decided to hold a 'naming ceremony' for them once they have their adult feathers and transition outside.) There are so many lessons to learn about the animal and natural world, the environment, and caring for another living being.
The most important lesson that they are learning is compassion. We have had these little creatures for less than 24 hours and already my oldest one is taking comfort in their companionship. Yesterday, he was upset at his little brother because he ate the last of the granola bars. Crying, he took himself to the safe spot and laid on the carpet as he often does when upset. I asked if he wanted to go visit the chicks in the garage until he felt better. He eagerly agreed and sat on the little chair next to their box alone. Within ten seconds, he was smiling and inviting me in to share his observations about the little birds. I remember doing the same thing with my dog when I was young. Upset, I would go outside to his pen and lay next to him. Looking into his eyes, I would tell him all of my troubles and feel better. It warms my heart to know that my children will have many loving animals to share their stories with as they grow.
During our bedtime routine each night, the boys have about twenty minutes to choose a quiet activity before we read books and turn off the light. Last night, our oldest one wanted to spend quiet time with the chicks. He went out into the garage and came back in a few minutes later, grabbing his guitar. "I am going to play them a bedtime song. My girls love it when I play the guitar for them!" He brought the guitar out into the garage and softly started to strum. He lovingly looked into the box at the tiny chicks pecking and scratching and snuggling up together.
Only a few hours in, we are so happy with the new additions to our family. I am curious to see how caring for these chicks will challenge and enrich our lives. So far, all four of us are happy Mama Hens.
